Duvets became popular around the world in the 20th century as a convenient form of bed covering. In some parts of the world they are also known as quilts and are used as extra bedding or mattresses in households in addition to regular mattresses for kids and extra guests.
Cotton/Polyester Blend - Polyester is a man-made fiber that can be blended with cotton to make one of many Poly cotton blends. The resultant fabric is not only less expensive than the equivalent grade of cotton but it improves washability at high temperatures.
From this practical and utilitarian beginning in a European peasant hut the duvet cover has developed to include being the center of a modern bedroom decor. It still protects but it has also become a fashion item that is easily changed and stored. The original comforters and covers were plain and drab but eventually the cover’s decorative possibilities were realized.
It is true that there are a limited number of bed sizes in the US - twin full queen etc. - and that the corresponding duvet insert or duvet cover sizes will fit their respective beds. However if you are not purchasing the duvet insert and cover as a set size can be an issue. It is not a matter of having either item fit the bed but the insert and cover need to fit each other. It is worth a little time up front to avoid bringing home a duvet cover that looks too big and sloppy because it is too big or one that causes your duvet insert to bunch-up because the cover is too small.
A duvet is a soft bedding bag filled with bird feathers or down soft cotton silk wool or a synthetic substance like polyester or foam that is protected with an outer covering. Since it is a complete bedding unit by itself it can do away the need for having a mattress or bed bed sheets or blankets. Duvets originated in northern rural Europe where winters required thermal insulation; duvets fulfilled that need especially for small children.
Cleaning - Speaking of staining the great thing about your double duvet cover is the ease in which it can be cleaned. No more lugging that heavy comforter to the laundry mat for an industrial sized machine the duvet simply is removed from the comforter and (following manufacturer’s instructions) is usually easily machine washed right at home. When the bedding is being used in a child’s room try to stay away from beading fringing or other difficult to wash details because the odds are the label will read dry clean only which just might have you making expensive and time consuming weekly trips to your local dry cleaner.
