The duvet story begins a few centuries ago with down comforters in Europe and silk comforters in Asia. Both comforters required a significant amount of time to make which gave them value. Also both types are excellent insulators but neither one was happy being washed in the local stream nor are they happy in a modern washer.
Duvet cover size - Comforters come in different sizes. The size of the cover you buy has to match the size of your duvet; otherwise the cover will just be completely useless. Take the necessary measurements of your duvet and then find a cover that matches these measurements. Note that this does not mean that you have to buy a cover with the same measurements because it will not fit. Buy one that is slightly bigger perhaps a few inches bigger so that the cover will fit the comforter.
Once you have the duvet insert measurements the measurements of your duvet cover can range from being the same size as the insert to being about two inches larger in both directions. For instance if your queen size insert measures 85" wide by 90" long your duvet cover should be from 85 to 87" wide by 90 to 92" long. Since both insert and cover are made of cloth and flexible these limits can be pushed a little but be sure the item being purchased can be returned before going too far outside of the determined range.
From this practical and utilitarian beginning in a European peasant hut the duvet cover has developed to include being the center of a modern bedroom decor. It still protects but it has also become a fashion item that is easily changed and stored. The original comforters and covers were plain and drab but eventually the cover’s decorative possibilities were realized.
Duvets for children: Planning bedding for small children requires a lot of effort. Because children keep growing buying duvets and duvet covers can be an expensive affair as sizes have to be changed and maintenance becomes a problem as they may have to be changed often if they are stained or damaged. Some children have independent tastes and may want duvets in sizes of their choice featuring designs and styles which catch their fancy from time to time. However they can be a good alternative to regular bedding where space is a constraint and where smaller children have to be placed in the master bedroom for easier supervision.
Cotton - In general cotton is a good fabric choice for bedding because its flexibility softness and breatheability all add to its comfort level. The quality of the cotton and the manner in which it is weaved effect its softness and feel. Quality is mainly based on the length of the cotton fibers (staples) attached to the cotton seeds. The weave produces different thread arrangements and it also establishes the thread count which is the total number of threads when counted along the top and one side of a square inch of material. The thread count of good quality sheets starts around 180 while even better quality sheets continue up the range to thread counts of 400 or 500. Thread counts above the 400 to 500 range are available but many people question their increased value.
